Fun adventures

Since this will likely be the only time I ever have the entire summer off, we are taking full advantage and making sure to spend lots of time doing the things we have so little time for otherwise. We took Tyler to Dutch Wonderland amusement park, we've been swimming daily, we went to the Philadelphia Zoo, day trip to the beach, lots of shopping, lots of day trips here and there and lots of playing out in the yard. Jeff and I also took a drive to Maryland to get steamed crabs one afternoon and we've had lots of friends and family over for swimming, dinner and hanging out.

It's been a busy time, but we are enjoying spending so much time together as a family.

Tyler had a blast at his friend Emily's birthday party on Saturday. Mickey and Minnie came to play and he couldn't help himself joining the birthday girl in her photos. He was so tired with no nap and all the excitement that he fell asleep in the car about a block after leaving the party--and this is a kid who almost never sleeps in the car. It was truly a fun day for the kids and all us adults got to enjoy good food, good company and excellent weather.

I think we are going to have to consider a trip to Disney in the near future. . .

Jeff keeps telling me I need to toot my own horn more, so I agreed to put up this article from an award I won recently. It's been a really great year and I was very humbled to be honored by this Business Woman of the Year award. The organization, Women's Referral Network of Chester County is a great place for professional women to network, socialize and grow their businesses. I served on the board for many years and was its President for 2 years. It has really been a great place for me to get business and meet some remarkable women. Here is the link. I can't believe it's been 2 months since I last posted. Things have been pretty busy here, but I honestly don't know where the time goes.

Since our last post, Jeff and I stole some time away by ourselves (first vacation without Tyler) to San Francisco in November. We had never been there so we enjoyed all the tourist attractions, stayed in a lovely little boutique hotel, took naps every day and ate ridiculously priced food (although it was very tasty). I was surprised at how expensive everything was and a $14 bagel and cream cheese with juice on our last morning about put me over the edge. We enjoyed the city but were definitely ready to come home. Tyler, on the other hand, couldn't have been more thrilled to spend the time with Grammy and PopPop. He didn't even want me to get him out of bed the first morning back and was crying for Grammy. Guess I should be glad he wasn't upset, but a little bit of excitement at having us back would have helped the ego.

I was also made a partner at the law firm. I've known for a while, but I was sworn to secrecy until they made the big announcement at the firm Christmas party this week. I'm the first woman so we'll see how they react to a woman's perspective. It's a great group of guys so I have no doubts we'll all do just fine. I really like them and it's nice to see a group of people who like each other get to work together everyday. There's very little competition and we are all there to work for a common goal--not like many law firms I've seen.

And for the big news, we are expecting again in June! We had our first ultrasound and all is well so far. Tyler tells us he wants a "girl baby", but we'll be happy with either sex--we just hope for another baby who is as easy going as he is.

2nd Birthday

We had a little party on Sunday for Tyler's 2nd birthday. Several toddlers and a dirt pile! The kids had a blast and we knew the party was a success when Tyler woke up the next morning and said "Can we have a party?" He loved playing with the kids and of course digging in the dirt is always a favorite activity.

October Already

I can't believe it's October already. Is it possible Tyler's going to be 2 on the 16th? We've planned a little construction party for him, just a few kids and big piles of dirt. He loves 'helping daddy' and if Jeff is outside he has to follow to "help"--which often means he's in the dirt. Thankfully he listens well and really does want to help but I guess dirt is really distracting. He does pick up weeds, tries to use the broom to sweep out the garage, etc. but then sits down and digs. He's constantly asking for a real shovel (instead of plastic sand shovels) so Jeff gave finally gave him his very own metal trowel, which he thinks is a shovel for his size and handles with such care.

Next month, Jeff and I are taking our first vacation ALONE since Tyler was born. Neither of us has been to the west coast, so we decided to stay in the heart of San Francisco. There is so much to do there we are having trouble narrowing our choices. Frankly, I'm just excited to actually get to sleep in--really sleep until my body wakes up, instead of the usual 6am wake up to a child yelling "Mommy turn on the light".

My mom bought a pop up tunnel at a yard sale about a year ago, and it was the best $2 she ever spent. We have it set up in our living room (which we use for nothing other than this tunnel now) and Tyler goes through it 20 times a day.

He's also getting a big kick out of the sliding board at parks. You see him holding Emily's hand in this picture. He's always touching her and now constantly asking if we can go see Emily. It's starting early. . .

Longwood

We visited Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, PA. Tyler had such a blast we are going to go again soon. Not sure why we haven't taken advantage of the tourist attraction before when it's only 15 minutes from my office. We were so excited watching Tyler enjoy the trees and gardens. They have specific areas for kids and a childrens garden where kids are encouraged to touch and play and the even provide towels for you. Tyler was soaked! We had to pry him away.

School Days

Tyler started school two mornings a week. We thought it was time he was around some additional kids and it gives Jeff some time to get work done uninterrupted. This first week has been rough. The first day he apparently had a really great morning with the other kids, but then near the end he got timid and sat by the door reading books by himself for a while. Then today he was extremely unhappy when I left and they said he didn't eat much of his lunch and he ran to Jeff and broke into tears when he saw daddy. The school (and everyone we know) keeps telling me it's normal and he's doing better than a lot of kids with the new surroundings, but I'm not sure my heart can take much more of this.

Vacation 2008

We just returned from another wonderful vacation with friends of ours and their little girl Emily. We went to the south side of Ocean City, NJ and loved it. The kids really enjoyed the beach and water. It ws pretty cold but Jeff was happy to jump waves. Tyler wasn't thrilled with the waves but he did like splashing his feet in the shallow water and digging in the sand. One afternoon he actually spent almost an hour scooping sand onto my legs and feet and then promptly crawled on my lap and curled up for a nap. We certainly tired out the kids each day. The weather was beautiful and we couldn't have asked for better company. We expected Emily and Tyler to be tired of each other after a week, but they seemed to really enjoy each other's company and liked to hold hands and walk everywhere together. They were also very good at giving hugs and kisses to each other and sharing toys.

Tyler had a word explosion this week. He now repeats the last three words or so of everything we say. And he started stringing sentences together--I asked him if he wanted to go to bed the other day and he responded with a very clear "I don't want to". He's pointing out things he sees as we go by--things I don't remember showing him or telling him about. He uses words constantly and says things like "night night bed" when he's tired, "Tyler's house" when we drive up our driveway (sounds like "lyler"), and "back to the house" when he was done at the beach. Our vacation condo was across from an empty lot with a construction Loader in it, so he loved looking out the sliding glass doors all day and yelling "loader". We also were near the beach comb tractor storage area and the fire house so he got to see (and tell us about) the tractors and fire engines too. He's certainly a healthy eater and doesn't turn his nose up at anything. He asks for his favorite foods by saying "cookies get please" and "more berries"--his new favorite food is strawberries. He loved his first taste of ice cream and ate a big slice of pizza on the boardwalk. His favorite breakfast food is SmartStart cereal and "waffles with srup"(syrup). Everything must be done by himself--I'm not allowed to feed him anything, he must have a fork, he puts on his own jacket and hat (and removes them when he wants--which doesn't work well for me), he gets his own snacks out of the cabinets at home, and has no interest in reading or playing with us unless it's on his terms (i.e. he asks us to play or brings us a book).

Chores

Tyler has been given his first chores around the house. He gets to feed the dogs in the morning and after we eat dinner. He loves helping Daddy and gets really upset if we have already done it. He walks over to the cabinet with the dog food, gets the dog bowl out and says "dog feed" repeatedly until we come over to help him scoop out the food. As you can see, we have a little problem making all the dog food get into the dog bowls, but he's always eager to help pick up the pieces he drops.

Tyler had a fun filled day at Emily's 2nd birthday party this past weekend. Despite relatively cool and gloomy weather the rain never came and we all enjoyed a great day. The theme was Sesame Street and everyone was to dress up in the color of their favorite Sesame Street character. Tyler currently loves cookie monster so blue it was. I had planned on royal blue because in my mind that was what color cookie is. However, when I did research (i.e. when I got around to pullnig out the cookie monster doll we have and putting it next to his shirt) I realized I was way off. He's actually a teal color. So, off to the store we went. I ended up matching perfectly and it worked out well because there were balloons at the party in all of the sesame street colors.

Elmo made an appearance and Tyler was in heaven. I thought he would be scared or tentative but he couldn't stop jumping and touching Elmo.

March for Babies

We completed the March of Dimes annual March for Babies recently. It was a nicely paced 5 mile walk around town. Friends of ours (Emily and her parents in the pic) had a baby girl at 24 weeks (15 weeks too soon!) and have been involved with March of Dimes since then. Thankfully Emily is fine but there are so many premies who aren't so lucky.

We had over 20 people (and one dog) who walked on team Emily Grace and raised over 16,000 dollars. Kristin made camo t-shirts for all of us as "Emily's Envoy". It was a really fun day despite the cold and rainy weather.

Tunnel time

I can't figure out where the time has gone lately. We got some snow and ice on Friday so I worked from home, or tried to. Jeff went out plowing and I was home with Tyler. Generally he plays well by himself, and I set him up with various activities, but I guess having Mommy home was a real novelty because I wasn't able to complete anything for work. So, we put it all away and went out to play in the snow. Then we got out the pop-up tunnel and spent a good while crawling back and forth through it.

We had our first family photos taken by a professional recently. Jeff loved the location--outside and amidst a big sprawling oak tree. It was a really cold day so they didn't turn out as natural as we had hoped--we were all trying not to shiver!

Visit with Santa

We've been so busy getting ready for the holidays and with work that we haven't had any time to take photos. This is my busy time of year and we have had so many large transactions that I can't believe any of the people I work with are even remotely ready for Christmas.

Tyler had his visit with Santa, but wasn't very excited to be left alone with the guy in the big red suit. I left work for an early lunch and met Jeff and Tyler at the mall on a Thursday afternoon around 11:30am for the Santa visit. As we had hoped there was no one in line and we zipped on through.

This past weekend was our first weekend with no real activities in months. I was a little under the weather but we each got to relax and enjoy the time together. The stacking cups and ball he is holding are his extra special toys. He will drop everything and come to get a cup or one of those balls. If I had known that the cheapest toys in Toys R Us would be sufficient, I could have saved myself a whole lot of effort and money over the past year!

Leaves are also the new hit in our hourse---playing with them, crumbling them and watching them fall is apparently very entertaining.

Tyler the Turtle

Tyler the Turtle learned to trick or treat this year. We were so pleased that he kept his costume on the entire time. We visited each of his grandparents and then went to a friends house.

My friend Kristin (her little girl Emily is in the photo) sent over some additional photos of Tyler's birthday party. It so nice to have friends who love your children and cherish the special moments as well.

You can see on Tyler's face how he's thinking long and hard about the cake. He eventually tried it, but wasn't thrilled.

Tyler's favorite foods at the moment are bananas, mushrooms and graham crackers. I think they are so appealing, aside from the taste which he seems to love, because he can hold them and bite them by himself. No parents needed.

We are seeing our first real signs of separation anxiety in Tyler. He starts to cry now when I leave the room and when I hand him off to someone he clings with all his might. It's nice for the ego but listening to his cries is heartbreaking.

Tyler had his one year check up. He's 25 pounds and almost 32 inches. That's less than a pound gain from three months ago, but almost 3.5 inches. He's definitely getting taller and starting to thin out around the waist. Unless he starts putting on weight again all those new clothes I bought for winter will be falling off him! We switched from formula to milk and he seems to be doing ok. No bottle and he went right to sleep tonight, so it doesn't seem he minds the transition much.

First Presents

My PSU roommate visited for the weekend and she and I went to see a Penn State game and got to catch up on each others lives. She brought Tyler his first birthday presents and he loved pulling the paper apart. I finally was able to wrench the box away from him. So much for the actual gifts!

Labor Day Weekend

It is such a gorgeous weekend! Yesterday Jeff and I went up to the first PSU game of the season. PSU won against Florida International 59-0. It was great weather and a beautiful day to be at a game. Tyler got to spend the entire day with my mom. Today it another beautiful day and we have been enjoying the yard. Tyler just sits and plays with the grass. Later this afternoon Jeff will be golfing and Tyler and I will be spending the evening with friends.

Drool!

Tyler now has four teeth--two on the bottom and two on the top are almost all the way in. He is getting more, and the drool is coming in buckets! Tonight he was content to play in just one corner. He's also picked up a new habit--when he's tired and we must be missing the rest of his signals, he pulls a pillow off the couch and lays on it.

Swimming

We have been spending a lot of time in the pool this summer. It's important to us to make sure Tyler is comfortable in the water. He has really come along, from simply splashing with his hands and clinging to us the first few weeks, to kicking and floating. He even puts his face in the water. The weather was beautiful today, almost 90 degrees, and the water was 82 degrees.

Standing Around

Tyler is really getting his feet under him. He loves to stand at the gates and push things through. It's fun for a while until he decides he wants the items on the other side. Jeff went fishing on the Jersey shore with his Dad and brother on Saturday, so Tyler and I got to hang out all day together with no interruptions. He is getting so big, and talks so frequently. I'm sure he is having a conversation with me, as it's a frequent back and forth, but I don't know the language--those noises just aren't making sense to me!

Tyler went for his 9 month check up a week or so ago. He is just over 23 and 1/2 pounds, and 30 inches tall. He's in the 80th percentile. At his other appointments he was always in the 100th or high 90th percentile, so his growth is slowing a bit, thankfully! We are already into 18 month clothes, and I am starting to buy 24 months for winter.

Jeff and I would love to take a few days before the end of the summer and either go camping or back to the beach, but I don't know if it is going to happen.

Beach Babies

We spent a week at the beach in Ocean City, NJ with friends of ours and their 1 year old little girl, Emily. The kids had such a great time in the sand. The best thing we did though was purchase individual size pools for them on the boardwalk--Best $5 we spent all week. We just filled them with an inch or two of ocean water and Tyler was content to hold a toy and splash with the other hand for long stretches. The kids ate less sand and we weren't constantly running after crawling babies.

It was so nice to be able to just enjoy each other as a family without the demands of errands, work, cleaning and daily life.

Bath Time

Tyler is crusing around the furniture holding on (and falling down) so he seems to get so much dirtier. Those little fingernails collect everything! He loves bathtime and can't get enough of the splashing.

Self-feeding is going well. Tyler loves the Gerber stars that dissolve pretty fast, but because they get soggy, as soon as his fingers are wet they stick. And stick to anything!

Deck eyes

Ruger went missing the other night, we looked and looked for her. Our other dog wouldn't leave the deck, and we found out why. . . Ruger dug a hole to get under the deck after some animal and couldn't get herself out. Jeff had to rip apart the deck steps to give her enough space.

With Tyler crawling around so much the only way for us to accomplish anything is to secure him somewhere. The stroller is the best. We also see a new funny face once a day or more.

It's amazing how the weather turns in just one week. The ice and 30 degree weather are gone and the sun has been shining brightly. With 80 degree temps we have been taking advantage of the opportunity to be outside.

The weather has been pretty severe this week--we even had snow and ice! With that, Jeff has been able to be home with Tyler all week--can't do landscaping in the ice. Tyler is now sitting pretty well by himself. He goes for his 6 month checkup this week so we'll get to see how much he's grown.

Sunny Disposition

There are no down moments in our house now that Tyler is here. He amazes us with his sunny disposition. He can get himself across the room in record time. It's not a crawl, but he slides by pulling himself with his arms, and rolls his way to wherever he wants to be! He also pivots on his stomach with his legs in the air, and uses his arms to spin around and do 360 degree turns. We figure we don't have much time until he is fully mobile and crawling his way around!

Feeding

We thought Tyler was getting the hang of this feeding himself thing. He holds his own bottle about 80% of the time, and can get the spoon into his mouth pretty steadily. BUT, we underestimated how quickly things change. . .this feeding required about 8 paper towels and a bath afterward.

Tyler spent the weekend relaxing on the floor. His feet have become the most interesting thing to him, and it is so rare now that he stays on his stomach to do anything--after all, you can't play with your toes laying on your stomach! As much as we want to keep Tyler little and cuddly, he is more and more independent every day. He likes to play by himself, wants to hold everything himself and eat by himself. It's interesting to watch the wheels turn in his head. If he's not concentrating on something, he's smiling.

We are all getting a kick out of Tyler's mealtimes. He prefers to feed himself, and this is the result. He seems to enjoy himself though. It's just not always convenient to have to take full bath after every meal!

Tyler is really enjoying mealtimes now--oatmeal cereal is his current favorite. We had dinner with my mom who decided to feed Tyler his dinner.

Only, she spent most of the time cleaning him off between bites because she doesn't like the mess. He indulged her but made it clear that he would rather eat.

Tyler attended his first party--a double birthday for Jeff's cousin Megan's two boys--Griffin turned three and Owen turned one. Despite having the sniffles, Tyler was all smiles.

Our nephew Jacob (Jeff's sister's baby) is in the red and in the background is birthday boy Griffin and his mom, Megan. Jacob is exactly two weeks older than Tyler, but he's about 4 pounds lighter and 2 inches smaller.

Snow Angel

First Foods

Tyler is now 17 pounds and almost 27 inches long and has two bottom teeth that are almost completely poked through. He's off the charts in height and weight for his age, and is eating us out of house and home--almost 45-50 ounces of formula a day. He is so hungry all the time so we decided to try some rice cereal just to see how it went and he LOVED it. I think he's been waiting for something other than all that formula. We let him have his own spoon and once he realized it could go in his mouth we had trouble getting it out.

Dogs

Tyler has been spending a lot of time watching the dogs run back and forth across the family room. Ruger (our black dog) has now taken an interest in Ty for the first time. She won't leave him alone.

First Snow

We got our first real snow of the season! Just a coating, but enough to try out Tyler's snowsuit. He was not thrilled with the outfit, it was just too much fabric for him. As usual, I'm sure he'd rather be weating his birthday suit.

Sick Baby

Tyler has been very ill--he developed RSV a terrible respiratory infection, likely a result of all the wonderful attention at his christening. The doctors were considering admiting him to the hospital because his breathing was so labored but first they suggested we try a respiratory machine at home. We have been administering medicine through the machine every three hours around the clock and it has worked well. He is getting much better, sleeping well (and alot) and today smiled and played for the first time in several days. Only bad news is Jeff and I have both gotten pretty sick now too. I have pneumonia, and Jeff seems to be developing the same.

Christening

Tyler was christened at St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church in Uwchland, PA on Sunday 1/21/07. He was very well behaved the entire ceremony and only squirmed a little when the cold water hit his head. We had a reception at our house afterwards with about 50 people, so Tyler was really passed around and stimulated the entire day. It made for a very restless night for him (and for us!)--he couldn't get used to laying by himself in a crib. I guess I'd prefer to be held too if I had a choice.

Eyes

Tyler's eyes are changing color now, from blue to greenish with gold in the center--just like his daddy's eyes. He is also drooling continuously now and creates big puddles. Here he was playing with my college roommate, Dawn, who came from NJ for his christening. She kept him occupied and happy while I got dressed.

Flood Waters

Our water heater literally exploded--the metal front panel flew off and across the room, causing water to gush out all over our finished basement. It looks like all of the walls, flooring and most furniture are going to have to be ripped out and replaced. Jeff has been busy dealing with plumbers, cleaning companies, insurance adjusters and contractors. He is a real trooper though, while dealing with all of the water and its headaches, he is still taking care of Tyler and getting things ready for Tyler's christening this Sunday. Of course everything happens all at once :)

I am now back to work and Jeff is taking a few months off to be home with Tyler. He thoughtfully started taking pictures of Tyler everyday so I won't feel like I'm missing everything.

Our New Year's was calm and relaxing with a few visitors to celebrate Jeff's birthday (Dec 31). Tyler watched the Nittany Lions beat Tennessee in the Outback Bowl.
